Pirates Spank Their Highest Score in Candy Fields Thriller

Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Sukhdeo’s Select: A Guyanese XI
Sunday 5 October 2008

Pirates of the St Lawrence came within 5 runs of a famous victory on Sunday, chasing 162 against Sukhdeo’s Select (A Guyanese XI). Batting first, Suk’s Select lost their first wicket in the third over. Hugue ‘Slingshot’ St-Jean swooped at mid wicket to grab dangerman Raj Sukhdeo. Chris ‘Badass’ Badman and Ian ‘Hansie’ Gunther bowled good channels in their opening spells, without much luck.

Suk’s Select dug in for a large total, with batsmen 2, 3, and 4 contributing almost 150 runs. Shaun ‘Pollock’ Loubser and debutant Andy ‘Big Teddy’ Tolson kept things tight. The introduction of St-Jean and Dr Savage stifled the onslaught in the last 10 overs. Coming after his 2 for 1 in 1 over last week, St-Jean repeated the feat. The south shore specialist finished with 3 for 17 in his 3 overs. Dr Savage claimed 1 for 10 in 2.

The Pirates fielding was sharp throughout. ‘Danny Boy’ Baker and Anton ‘Prince of Ukraine’ Parker held onto high catches in the deep. Sukhdeo’s Select finished on 161 for 7 in their 25 overs, at a rate just under 6.5 an over.

Openers ‘Steady Eddie’ Palmer and Angus ‘Trying Scotsman’ Bell battled against an accurate, swinging new-ball attack. With boundaries hard to come by, they kept the score ticking over with singles. Steady Eddie was out lbw after swivelling and missing a low pull shot from a spinner. Thiery ‘Punter’ Milot, who has World Cup ambitions, worked the gaps and kept the singles coming. Bell and Milot put on over 50 for the second wicket, before Bell was caught and bowled for 47, from a pullshot that hit high on the bat. Andy Tolson unleashed some monster shots in a rapid 30, including two sixes. The carnage caused a flutter in the fielding camp. Milot retired on 29 and Tolson followed almost immediately, bowled attempting an unselfish hoik into the power grid. Badman and Parker produced some late innings fireworks. They needed 6 off the final ball to tie, and managed to scramble 3 after a dropped catch and an overthrow.

An excellent team performance allround. If the Pirates can cut down on the extras (21 again), they will prove unstoppable.
