Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Adastrians Juniors
Sunday 31 May 2009
Pirates of the St Lawrence smashed Adastrians Juniors by 119 runs on Sunday in their highest ever victory. It was the Pirates’ first win of 2009, and the second week in succession they’ve scored more than 200.
Batting first, the Pirates got off to a flyer through openers Darren Bullivant and Angus Bell. The pair smote boundaries either side of the wicket in an opening stand of 42. Bullivant spanked two fours and a six before spooning a return catch to the bowler on 19. Thiery Milot batted patiently for 9 before belting left-armer Maman into the hands of long leg, who to that point looked like he couldn’t catch a cold.
Ed Palmer blazed the ball around the park before suffering a tweaked hamstring. Runner Greg Brander kept the score rattling along as the Pirates worm chart mounted.
Bell and Palmer amassed more than 100 – a record partnership for the Pirates. Bell finished on 93 not out, with eight fours and a six, and Palmer reached 47 not out at the innings close.
New ball pair Nick Hoolahan and Darren Bullivant, both Gold-Coasters but unrelated, bowled with pace and accuracy in their opening 10 overs, picking up a wicket apiece.
Hugue St-Jean bamboozled opener Goldie in his first over, slipping one through the gate second ball. The south shore specialist was in miserly form – conceding only 6 runs from his three overs.
Manas Gupta, powered by sugary drinks and the smell of victory, raced in two claim his first wicket for the Pirates, one of three catches behind by Greg Brander.
Brander was in outstanding form with the gloves. His next catch, off the bowling of Mark Sanders, saw him run, dive full stretch and pouch dangerman Bilal a foot above his head.
Colonel Sanders, always safe, claimed two catches himself, as Rob Savage and Tom Wisden made further inroads into the Adastrians batting. Thiery Milot, never one to miss out, staked his claim for the bowling averages with 2 for 5 in two overs. He needs one more wicket to get on the averages.
Adastrians were skittled for 91 in 25 overs, handing the Pirates a famous victory.
