Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Cricket Montreal
Saturday 1 August 2009
A thrilling match against Cricket Montreal was cut short in the most disgraceful circumstances on Saturday, as captain Senyo Nyakutse abandoned his players and the game in one of the most selfish acts seen on a cricket field.
Cricket Montreal had first bat on a firm track and fast outfield. Tom Wisden, second in the averages, bowled Arash early doors, with a full, swinging delivery.
The wicket brought Nyakutse to the middle. He and Srinivasa piled on 173 for the second wicket.
Nyakutse, after clubbing sixes around the park, retired on 114. Srinivasa, more patient, batted till the 35th over for his 57. The Pirates, to their credit, kept the ball full in the face of ruthless batting.
Myron dismissed Arman when he smashed the ball into the hands of Phil Roche at square leg. Dan Thomassin, number one in the bowling averages, bowled an economical spell in front of his old man. Bell picked up two wicket in two balls, split by an over, as the middle order choked in the final overs. After a barrage of blows, and despite several misfields in the heat, the Pirates did well to keep the opposition to 208 for 5 in their 35 overs.
Phil Roche and Bharat Kumar got the Pirates off to a flyer in reply. The right-hand-left-hand combination caused all sorts of problems for Cricket Montreal, as the score mounted to 37 off 5 overs. Bharat Kumar, after shots all round the ground, was undone by a yorker that ricocheted into middle stump off his pads.
Phil Roche went golfing, lofting the ball over the infield and cashing in when needed. He and Milot, who looked in his best form of the season, added 41 in 6 overs, as the Pirates kept ahead of the required rate. Milot then let one through the gate, bowled for 11.
Bell rode his luck, driving over the top and taking advantage of misfields as the target dropped below 100. Phil Roche, with 5 fours, was left on 50 not out, his maiden half century for the Pirates.
The game looked set for a thrilling finale when Nyakutse, frustrated at his team’s performance (most of whom were playing in their first match), and having shouted at them repeatedly, walked from the field without a word and decided to abandon the game after 17 overs, leaving five kids without a lift home and 17 disappointed players on the field.
