Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Hoboken-Philadelphia Alliance
Sunday 12 September 2010
A savage hundred partnership between Angus Bell and Professor Andrew Granville blew away the Alliance’s hopes of victory on Sunday. The Pirates recorded their eighth win of the season, by a whopping 55 runs.
Bell smashed an unbeaten second century for the Pirates, in 52 balls, and Granville clubbed 46 – his highest score for the club. The pair added 107 for the second wicket, including 23 boundaries.
Not renowned for their Twenty20 abilities, the Pirates amassed 182 for 2 in their 20 overs. Only Anish Karyat eluded the suffering of the bowlers, finishing with 4 overs for 21.
In reply, the Alliance lost Marsan in the first over, bowled by an in-swinging brute from Farooq Syed. The Pakistani paceman was in terrifying form, removing fellow opener Karyat in similar fashion.
Levin batted smartly for 44, upercutting over the slips and pulling to the leg side fence. His 50 partnership with Muscles Mazzalupi threatened to pull off the chase of the century. It came to an end when Uncle Sukhdeo removed his sweater and snuck one through the gate.
The wickets were shared around. Wigley produced a rare bouncer, unintentionally, and was threatened to be pulled out the attack by the umpire, only to follow up by finding the outside edge. Savage finally did for Levin, enticing the left-hander from his crease to give Horne his second dismissal. Middleton bowled on the money to put on the squeeze.
The introduction of Phil Roche’s Mr-Left-Arm-Spin further defied the stats. He collected two for 12 – one a blinding left-handed effort by Bell at short midwicket – to bring his left-arm strike rate to 6, and average to 4.
The Alliance ended an excellent all-round tour on 127 for 9 in their 20 overs.
