Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Sukhdeo’s Select: A Guyanese XI
Saturday 18 September 2010
Pirates of the St Lawrence romped to their ninth win of the season at The Candy Fields on Saturday, garrotting Sukhdeo’s Select by 8 wickets. In their tightest performance in the field to date, the Black Caps skittled the Guyanese for 126 and completed their chase in 26 overs.
With his tail up and the wind whistling at his rear, Phil Roche produced his most accurate spell for the TĂȘtes de Morts so far. Only 16 runs came off the Black Stallion’s eight overs, the ball beating the bat multiple times an over.
But it was former Surrey Under 12s’ star Dan Brodie who made the breakthrough, bamboozling Mohammad Umar with a slower, short ball that drifted into the stumps seconds after Umar swivelled to launch it over squareleg. Brodie then accounted for Rocky, who chipped a lollipop third ball to Krishnan at short midwicket to complete an astonishing double-wicket maiden.
Roche blew away the middle order, bowling the box-less Mohammad Saddick who, against all advice, went on the pull again. Roche then frustrated the dangerous Hari Sukhdeo, pinning him on the crease before Hari top-edged a steepling chance to Bell at midwicket.
Sukhdeo senior sought to resurrect the innings from 42 for 4. He came out guns blazing, cracking cuts, pulls and glances to the fence. Together with son Raj, he added 48 for the fifth wicket before Middleton, at the end of a miserly spell, drifted one in to trap Raj lbw.
Granville and Legault maintained the slow run rate. They combined to remove Sukhdeo senior for a sizzling 31 when he slapped a pull to mid-on.
Bell, bowling with an erect pinkie into a gale force from the Terminal End, cleaned up the tail with 3 for 14, claiming two return catches.
Sukhdeo’s Select had been stunned into 126 all out in 37.2 overs.
Openers Roche and Horne made light work of the chase, carving at more than six an over with ease. Roche had to retire on 26 – his 11th not out of the season – to leave for a dinner party. He took 16 off Hari Sukhdeo in his final over and burst super-sub Erfan Chowdhury’s nose with a towering top edge that ended horribly at mid-on.
Once the blood had been mopped up and a shaking Chowdhury escorted to the car, Horne followed in Roche’s retirement steps on 25.
Krishnan, looking calm and collected, worked the ball into gaps either side of the wicket, forcing changes in the field every ball. At the other end, Messrs Brodie and Middleton fell to the pace and swing of Hari and Mohammad Umar.
After some delicate sweeps off the deadly Bhajooram, Krishnan ended the innings on 40 not out, guiding the Pirates home without alarm.
