The Pirates of the St Lawrence vs York Cricket Club encounter at York University’s Glendon Campus appeared to be headed for a one-sided result in favour of the home side till the appearance of Pirates’ star Phil Roche at the crease. Playing a determined, quickfire innings of 41, which included 3 fours and 2 sixes, Roche’s knock ensured that the Pirates were at the crease when the heavens opened and the Gods deemed the match a non-result. A shot that particularly stands out is a lofted pull over deep fine leg into the forest leaving the York bowlers wondering if the cricketing lifestyle was worth these hazards. In this, he was ably supported by in-form Pirates skipper Bell, who scored a chanceless, elegant 37, taking his average to 170 this season. A swashbuckling opening stand from Savage and some late innings leg-work from Bousfield and Legault pushed the Pirates to 150 – opening up the possibility of a thrilling finale.
Batting first, York scored 274, the major contributions being 113 by Harry and a sublime 73 from Vishan, battling against a grassy outfield. Inexperienced umpiring ensured that Harry survived at least 4 times, the most inexplicable decision being a ‘not out’ when the batsman was valiantly caught one-handed by wicketkeeper Bousfield following a thick outside edge off Bhawalkar. Skipper Bell then demonstrated to the inexperienced York umpires how to give decisions by recalling a York batsman who’d been triggered LBW after an inside edge.
The Pirates bowlers were also hampered in their efforts by a pitch that had no life, movement, or bounce, with the result that anything that was pitched short was hit out of the ground. In the face of these limitations, the Pirates bowlers put up a brave front with Carter, Ludhani, Sakrani, and Bell bowling accurately and keeping the York batsmen guessing. The arrival of rain was an anti-climax to a game that was played, overall, in the right spirit. The game and tour ended with camaraderie and good feasting all round.
