Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Bengal United
Saturday 1 September 2012
By Neville Cardus (channeling through Prashant Bhawalkar)
In a match featuring more than 600 runs, which was sufficiently thrilling to result in many bitten knuckles, two Canadians were among the heroes. The first of these was the elegant and destructive Bruce Maxwell, who made 124, and the second was the slightly-built, unassuming Daniel Hogg, who took 5-40. Among these, it is perhaps the second that needs to be singled out for a special mention as it almost included a hat trick. Either way, it ended high on the list of unexpected destructive spells, alongside the likes of Michael Clarke, Allan Border, and Viv Richards, not to mention Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s twin five wicket hauls in one-day cricket. The result — a Bengal United victory by a jock strap-lining margin of 6 runs — became almost inconsequential as cricket was the winner.
On a breathlessly hot day, Bengal batted first and were powered by the scorching batting of centurions Inderpreet (116) and Maninder Singh (104). After surviving simple chances early on, these two innings were the foundation on which Bengal built an almost-unattainable target. Singh’s innings was more subdued than usual and only included one six. Throughout, he expertly rotated the strike, particularly when the sharp Victorian speedster Robinson was bowling. In the end, both retired to allow the remaining Bengal batsmen a chance to bat. The opportunity wasn’t taken and only Bhaskar managed double figures. The others, it appeared, were to busy trying to figure out Hogg’s bowling.
Chasing a mammoth 309, the Pirates almost pulled off a startling victory, led by the complete innings of Maxwell. He was well-supported by Choudhry (37) and Wareing (36). The latter, in particular, was a revelation. Scoring 36 in only 23 deliveries, the Kiwi hit five boundaries and a six underlining the benefits of a past tennis career. While Wareing was at the crease, he seemed unstoppable and it was believed, at one point, that the Pirates would reach their record-breaking target with overs to spare.
In the end, the match went down to the wire. The final overs provided the eager spectators with some heroics from Islam, who was particularly severe on the dangerous Mahfuz. Hitting the ball hard and flat, the young talented Bangladeshi all-rounder appeared to be on track to score the 14 runs required off the last over. Unfortunately, despite the Pirates breaking the magic 300 mark for the first time, the Bengal score proved to be only slightly unattainable, and the Pirates had to rest content with an almost-victory and two astonishing performances by Canadians.
