Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Caribbean Kings of Brampton
Saturday 14 August 2010
A Rich Horne five-for and rapid 49 not out brought Pirates of the St Lawrence within a whisker of defeating the Caribbean Kings of Brampton. Requiring 20 off the final over, Horne smashed two sixes. One more ball might have seen the home team to victory.
The Caribbean Kings began the day in thunderous fashion, smiting the first five balls of the match to the fence. From there, the run rate could only come down.
Nuck Wugley struck in his first over, bowling with guile and trickery, trapping Bhoj on the crease. Uncle Sukhdeo toyed with his nephews, spinning the ball past both edges. Only 12 runs came off his 8 overs.
The stars of the innings were Ray Nowrang and Horne. Nowrang collected a Pirates career-best 4 for 21 in 5.2 overs. Horne picked up his fifth five-for, with four stumpings and a run out.
After some terrifying blows deep into the hayfield from the Kings, it was calypso collapso, as they lost their last 8 wickets for 35 runs. Only 5 wides were awarded in the entire innings (other visiting teams please take note).
Sundar Krishnan looked in blistering form, lashing the ball to all parts in reply. He lost partner Raj Sukhdeo early doors, bowled going on the drive.
While the Pirates had offered grenade lobs, the Kings came with rocket launchers, even their spinners justifying three slips.
Hari Sukhdeo threatened to hit out or get out, as the Kings piled on the pressure. When he fell stumped by half the length of the wicket, the Pirates were in mortal danger at 55 for 4.
Roche and Milot rescued the home team, adding 62 in sublime fashion. Roche rocked onto the back foot, blazing through the covers on his way to 33. Milot, looking in his best form of the season, punched and pulled en route to 27. Both fell to chipped catches in quick succession, but had given the Pirates a wedge of hope.
Uncle Sukhdeo and Horne made hay, slapping to all parts. With the required run rate spiralling past two a ball, they put the willies up the Kings, adding 63.
But with 20 needed in the final over, Horne crashed two sixes into the forest, including the final ball. Alas, with four wickets in hand, but no overs, the Pirates fell short of victory by 5 runs.
