Pirates of the St Lawrence versus West Island Sailors
Saturday 29 July 2012
by the Dublin Death Star
Despite a magnificent maiden hundred from Richard Horne, Pirates of the St Lawrence were narrowly beaten by West Island Sailors on Saturday. Set 234 to win, the Sailors chased down the total with only two balls to spare.
Batting first in somewhat sticky conditions, the Pirates made slow and steady progress at the start of their innings. Initially gifting the home side a host of extras, the visiting Sailors soon found their line and length. Pragenesh, Vatsal and Dhiren all made early inroads into the Pirates’ top order and it took a 51-run partnership between Thomas and the ever reliable Horne to steady the ship for the Black Caps.
Coming together at 37-3, the two batsmen found the gaps with ease and laid the foundations for the home side’s innings. Unfortunately, the stand was broken soon after the pair had put on 50. Thomas fell for a well made 16 off the bowling of Hira. The wily seamer was in fine form and accounted for three Pirates batsmen on the day – finishing with figures of 3 for 10.
While the rest of the Pirates’ batting line up struggled to make significant contributions, Horne put together one of the most memorable innings in the history of the club. Delivering a perfectly paced innings, the wicket-keeper/batsman treated those in attendance to a master class in batting with the tail. After negotiating some difficult overs early on, Horne went through the gears as his innings progressed and found the boundary with regularity.
Guiding the lower-order batsmen through the final overs of the innings, Horne ensured the Pirates put on a valuable 91 for the last three wickets. Never flustered, the New Zealander was the epitome of calm as he approached his maiden century and brought up the landmark in style with a six over deep square-leg. Finishing on 106 from only 93 balls, Horne’s innings featured 14 fours and 2 sixes.
Set 234 to win from 42 overs, the visiting West Island Sailors came flying out of the blocks putting on 54 from the first six overs as the Pirates dished up full toss after full toss. Vatsal was in devastating form, notching up a quick-fire 40, which included 6 fours and 2 sixes. The stylish left-hander looked set for a big score, but was ultimately undone by a loopy full-toss. Looking to clear the ring of fielders on the off-side, he drilled the ball from Mulligan straight to point where he was expertly caught by Morton above his head.
The Sailors tumbled from 64 without loss to 79-4 when Granville, Mulligan and Islam picked up a series of wickets in close succession. Tight bowling and good work in the field helped the Pirates halve the visitors run-rate in a matter of 10 overs.
Islam and Bell bowled four maidens in a row, strangling the middle order. Bell was particularly miserly, rattling off eight overs for just 11 runs, while Islam picked up two wickets in his best spell to date to leave the seamen reeling at 112 for 5. While the run rate decreased, Dinesh and Kalpesh still made valuable contributions – 50 and 18 respectively.
The visitors came out firing after drinks, aided by a spate of wides and a return of the full toss disease. Picking up the run rate, the Sailors’ lower order began to find the boundary with ease. In response, Savage bagged a brace of wickets.
Legault came back into the attack to remove Dinesh and Kalpesh, leaving the Pirates just two wickets from victory and the Sailors 36 runs adrift. With the outcome of the match in the balance, Mukesh and Pragenesh came together to guide the Sailors home with frightening power. The pair put on a rapid 38 for the tenth wicket. Left needing 10 to win off the final over, the lofty hitters took only four balls to seal a thrilling two-wicket win for the Sailors.
