Records Smashed as Pirates Run Riot at The Candy Fields

Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Colonial Cavaliers of Boston
Saturday 13 June 2009

Darren Bullivant hit the first Pirate hundred as Pirates of the St Lawrence recorded a historic double victory over the Colonial Cavaliers of Boston at The Candy Fields last weekend.

The Pirates posted their highest ever total, smacking 272 for 6 in 40 overs on Saturday, as they secured a 51-run win.

Coming after last week’s 100-run defeat in Vermont, the Pirates put their daemons to bed immediately with a record opening partnership. Angus Bell and Darren Bullivant spanked 132, the pair mixing patience with periods of savagery. Bell was caught behind off the toe for 67. His innings included 6 fours and 4 sixes. The carnage continued as Steady Eddie Palmer and Bullivant added 98 for the second wicket.

Bullivant waited till he’d reached his first 50 for the club before cutting loose, drilling balls to the boundary on both sides. His first century for the Pirates came with a trademark cut through point. It was the first ton by a Pirate and the fourth in Bullivant’s career. “Fuck,” he later said of his innings. His century included 8 fours and 2 sixes. He was unlucky to be run out two balls later, victim of a sensational pick up and throw by opposition captain Fry at cover.

Palmer, hobbling with hamstring troubles, decided now to deal only in boundaries. Mixing 19th century style with IPL fireworks, he lofted a six and 5 fours, the sweep proving particularly lucrative.

Andy Tolson bashed 12 with three agricultural blows before being bowled. Richard Horne, back after more than a month off with a broken finger, was unfortunate to be plucked at cover. Thiery Milot and Phil Roche fell selflessly in the slog in the final overs.

With 272 on the board, it looked an insurmountable target for the visiting Cavaliers. Every time they scored a single, their required run rate would spiral. But with a backbone of experienced English gentlemen, they came out fighting, lashing 47 in quick time. They were particularly ruthless on anything short.

Sanger and Hoolahan bowled well with the new ball, but with the wicket and outfield playing their best all season, they couldn’t strike. The breakthrough came when Tolson induced an edge from a drive and Brander gobbled the ball at gulley.

Brander steadied the run flow. He was the pick of the bowlers. His 3 for 40 was a spanner in the spokes for the Cavaliers, who, at 177 for 4, and up with the required rate, looked like they might steal an unlikely victory.

Hoolahan ran out top-scorer Hewitt for 62 at the bowler’s end with a direct hit from short third man, swinging the momentum back to the home team. Roche produced his most economical display to date and sounded the death knell with the wicket of Mallinson.

MacLeod was again the prize fielder, but six dropped catches by the Pirates, three of them off Bell’s bowling, including one which Roche pouched before Tolson clotheslined him à la Quebec rugby, and 51 extras nearly spoiled the party. The Pirates were fortunate they had so many runs on the board.

With the Cavaliers requiring an unlikely 53 for victory off the final ball, Bullivant had Kilpatrick run out from the deep cover boundary coming back for a second.
