Pirates Peppered to All Parts Before Washout

Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Cosmopolitans: A Trinidadian XI
Saturday 29 August 2009

Pirates of the St Lawrence braved a dazzling onslaught from Suresh Ramkissoon on Saturday, as the match versus Cosmopolitans ended in a washout.

Ramkissoon, playing his second match against the Pirates, spanked 149 before retiring. His 11 sixes and 8 fours meant the Pirates spent much of their afternoon searching for lost balls in the creek.

Against a batting line-up packed with premier-grade ringers, all the bowlers suffered. Brahama Melaram was the most economical, picking up 2 for 40 in 7 overs. Roche and Davis bowled with venom in their two spells, Roche taking 2-40.

The spinners came in for the harshest treatment. Bell chipped in with two wickets when Ramkissoon wasn’t on strike.

Tom Schmidt escaped the beating after copping a ball on his nose at cow corner off Bullivant’s bowling. It was the only chance Ramkissoon offered. He went on to score a further 109. Bloodied Schmidt was ordered to the nurse’s office and came back to collect 1 for 0 in two balls at the death.

There were further injury scares throughout the day. In the adjacent field, a girl was thrown from the horse and sent to hospital feeling pins and needles in her legs. Angus Bell hit the wicketkeeper with his bat when it flew out his hands attempting a hook. Richard Horne nearly killed the squareleg umpire when his bat travelled even further with a power sweep. To cap it off, Robert Davis, displaying more pace than accuracy, landed his girlfriend’s Pontiac in the ditch. Mercifully, barring a cut to Davis’s forehead, the pair were okay. Farmer Jean-Paul was able to drag the Pontiac out of the ditch with his jeep. Unfortunately, with all the nosy buggers blocking the patch, the Pontiac then crashed into the back of the jeep, putting the tow bar through the back panel.

Chasing 270 in 35 overs in the rain, the Pirates never looked in with a shout. Phil Roche was bowled by a grubber while attempting a pull, as the wet pitch began to disintegrate. Daz Bullivant and Richard Horne were momentarily trapped in suspended animation a third of the way down the wicket, resulting in the Aussie being run out by point.

Rich Horne drove high over the infield and Bell square along the ground, as the pair put on an unbeaten 36. But then, with the Gods conspiring against a Pirates victory, a very cold and very wet opposition decided to call it a day.
