Pirates of the St Lawrence versus Brossard Warriors
Saturday 24 May 2014
by Even Steven
After initial fears of rain, the sun shone brightly over The Candy Fields, luring out all the mosquitoes who had been hiding during winter. The setting was terrific for yet another agonizingly close game.
With grass cutting neatly done, the outfield was quick, thus reflecting the start made by the Brossard Warriors. Regular wickets from the opening set of bowlers ensured the brave Pirates were still in touch, with tight and energetic fielding throughout the innings.
Islam and Grant got the ball rolling with lively opening spells, followed by some tight bowling from Cilliers and Gharat. After Rajesh and Amit had taken the score to 101 for 3, it was time for the spin triplets to take the game to the Warriors, as Captain Bell, Badugu, and Woodall all took two wickets. The catching was of good standard, with Woodall pouching three, yet a late Brossard surge took the visitors to an imposing 220.
Then it was time for the fight.
Captain Bell elected to open alongside Islam. A steady start ensued until Islam fell bowled in the 12th over. Then came what was one of the best partnerships in months, as “Nicki Manoj” Mridha joined the skipper in a daunting effort, the pair plundering 121 runs in fluid style. Mridha was unfortunately dismissed chipping to short mid wicket for a well-worked 59. The characteristic Pirate collapse then came, as few overs remained to knock off the runs.
Bell was finally dismissed for 108 in the final over, a brilliant century, and the first since Newman’s record-breaking feat in October 2013.
A close margin of defeat, and not many answers as to where things went wrong, but a spirited performance which may only encourage the Pirate camp for the rest of the season in search of winning ways.
