Hurricane Hari

Returning to The Candy Fields after a long hiatus, the men from Guyana found themselves battling the elements in the form of a powerful wind. It proved insufficient, however, as the onslaught of the Ramkissoons, with Tony scoring a belligerent 103, including eight fours and five sixes, and Mahesh a useful 38, set up a one-sided clash. Their respective dismissals ushered in a collapse, which was stemmed by sensible batting from Hari Sukhdeo, whose 49 ensured that the visitors scored a daunting 270 for 9 in 43 overs.

The match appeared to be all but over with the Pirates, like the tent structure, unable to cope in the wind as they crashed to 66 for 8. Fireworks were in the offing, however. The dashing Varma teamed up with the talented Gharat to put on 103 runs for the ninth wicket, perhaps causing the visitors the slightest anxiety. Only the catch of the season could end the partnership, as Hurricane Hari, puffing around the boundary from long-off, thrust out his right hand full stretch to save six and remove Gharat for his maiden 50. Varma fell lbw for 87 shortly after, as Birbal finished with 5/36.

However, the visitors had yet another surprise in store, in the form of stalwart Melaram. The veteran all-rounder, hovering on the boundary after house sales all morning, began a savage onslaught that had the offices of the UN raising their eyebrows. His unbeaten 36 off 10 balls included four boundaries and three sixes. It proved to be too little too late, though, as last man Bhawalkar fell to Birbal with the Pirates 63 runs behind. In spite of spirited tail-end resistance, Sukhdeo’s Select had scored a definitive victory.
